Updated: Systems of Equations/Inequalities

A few things. There are a few lesson plans, but mostly student worksheets and materials to use while teaching my Algebra 1 unit on systems of equations and inequalities. There’s a lesson at the end on using them to model situations in the real world. The “Extra Resources” handout includes links to a set of youtube videos with great explanations (I’d email the sheet out to students, or post it on the website during the unit). The whole thing should work nicely if downloaded and unzipped so that all the files sit in the same folder, begin by opening the unit-systems.pdf file.
This year I taught this unit mostly out of the text book and although most students can solve systems of equations, they struggle to write them. Inequalities fared worse. To correct for this, I wanted there to be fewer application problems and more clarity of instructions on designing the systems. Fewer class problems should mean classes gain a stronger understanding of problems that are covered. I wanted worked solutions to be readily available for students and myself. I wanted a better plan for this unit next year. If you have criticism or happen to use this, I’d like to hear it.

Nick, I came across your site while working on an assignment for a class I’m taking. I am impressed…and I’ve barely taken a look at what you have here. I started teaching math again after many years of teaching business and I’m excited about using technology to help kids understand algebra better. My students are low-end math learners, but I believe strongly that it’s because they have different learning styles than your typical average-to-bright math student. They need different kinds of instruction…things that will motivate them outside the text book. You’ve put a lot of work into this…I look forward to using what you have here and sharing things of my own.
